Rachel Gilman is originally from Southern California where she grew up in a home where every wall was painted a different primary colour. Her parents collected all kinds of folk art especially from Mexico and New Mexico, and her ove of colour came from this environment. She does not shy away from loud, bright and nutty things.
Rachel moved to New York right after high school to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology and started to intern for her favourite designer Betsey Johnson. She worked with Betsey Johnson as a design assistant for three years sourcing prints and fabrics. She now has a collection of rose tattoos after become obsessed with rose prints during this time! Working with Betsey continued to fuel Rachel's love of unique colour combinations and 1980's style.
In 2000, Rachel began to assist different stylists, and eventually began styling her own projects for magazines such as Teen Vogue, Missbehave and Soma. Her jewellery line was created last summer for her own shoots that she styled at that time. She was so excited by the crazy, oddly shaped pieces that she had created, that Rachel began showing them to other stylists who in turn used them in their own shoots for magazines such as Numero, I-D and Mixte.
Rachel approaches her work by first finding odd colour combinations, then focusing on shape and size. She mostly uses wood but is also experimenting with other materials. Things like Arizona sunsets, swimming pools and rainbows are colours that especially move her and tries to incorporate these inspirations into her work. |
