Lisa Levine at Kabiri | Growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Lisa Levine discovered her talent for invention and decoration at a very young age, draping herself in the baubles and bijoux found in her grandmother's art deco style jewelry box. She went on to study her chosen craft at Parsons School of Design in New York City. After a year she felt a need for foreign inspiration, moving to Mexico and making jewelry with Billy King in San Miguel de Allende, an idyllic artist community in the mountains of central Mexico. From the rich indigenous cultures of the deserts of Mexico she gleaned an appreciation for the integration of unusual organic materials into her otherwise starkly modern creations. Everything from the frighteningly elegant form of the spines of native cacti to the subdued brilliance of red amber found a way into her masterly crafted pieces. She returned to the United States, landing across the bay from San Francisco in Oakland, California, where she completed her training in fine arts at the California College of Arts and Crafts.
Now, like a force from nature, Lisa has returned to New York with her best work yet--a collection of earrings, necklaces and pins that seamlessly combine the timelessly clean elegance of classic modern design with the lush sensuality of animal elements such as quills and feathers. Taking inspiration from everything from aquatic life and the geometry of architecture to the symbolic force of chains, which are then ubiquitous in her designs, Lisa has created a line of jewelry that allows women to feel both strong yet playful, flirtatious and mysterious. |
